Process Innovation: The Hidden Driver of Forging Excellence

Dattatray Dhende – Managing Director,
SUNLUB Technologies

As SUNLUB TECHNOLOGIES celebrates its 14th anniversary this year, I find it an appropriate moment to reflect on how process innovation has shaped our journey since our establishment in 2012 and, more importantly, the evolution of India’s forging industry.

India’s forging industry has earned a strong reputation in global manufacturing, supplying high-quality components to the automotive, defence, railways and engineering sectors. While investments in advanced machinery and auto-mation have strengthened production capabilities, I believe the industry’s next competitive advantage will come from continuous process innovation.

Manufacturing excellence is built through incremental improvements. Better lubrication, longer die life, reduced material loss and improved process consistency may appear to be small changes, but together they significantly enhance productivity, quality and profitability.

One area that deserves greater attention is lubrication. It should no longer be viewed as a consumable but as a critical process engineering tool. The right lubricant influences die life, material flow, component quality, cycle time and maintenance costs, making lubricant selection a strategic manufacturing decision.

As forging applications become more demanding, lubrication technology

must also evolve. At SUNLUB TECHNO-LOGIES, we have focused on developing application-specific solutions for diverse forging requirements. Our water-based graphite die lubricants deliver superior lubricity and die protection for demanding hot forging operations. Our non-graphite die lubricants offer cleaner operations with reduced smoke generation and improved surface finish, while our oil-based forging lubricants provide reliable performance in specialised applications requiring excellent adhesion under severe operating conditions. Our goal has always been to help customers optimise their manufacturing processes through the right lubrication technology.

Another challenge that deserves equal attention is oxidation during metal heating. Scale formation leads to material loss, inconsistent surface quality and increased machining costs. To address this, we developed SHINE MSP9 – Metal Surface Preventive, which forms a protective barrier on the metal surface during heating. It helps reduce scale formation and decarburisation, improving both material yield and surface finish. The ready-to-use product can be applied by brushing, spraying or dipping, making it easy to integrate into existing production lines while supporting safer operations through its non-hazardous and non-flammable formulation.

Looking ahead, I believe the future of forging will belong to manufacturers who continuously improve their processes rather than relying solely on investments in new equipment. Inno-vation is not always about revolutionary technology; often, it is about solving everyday manufacturing challenges through practical engineering solutions.

As we celebrate fourteen years of SUNLUB TECHNOLOGIES, our commit-ment remains the same, to work closely with the forging industry, develop technologies that improve productivity and quality, and contribute to strengthening India’s position as a globally competitive manufacturing hub.
